Climate Change & Sustainability Action Group
In April 2021, inspired by Christchurch City Councilās (CCC) funding for Sustainability project, PMINZ volunteers from Christchurch, Prawindra Mukhia, Ken Loughridge and PatrĆcia InĆŖz de Andrade, put forward a collaborative proposal to the Council. This was the birth of the CCSAG (Climate Change Sustainability Action Group).
Sustainability is complex. It means different things to different people. It is evolving. Itās about balancing the needs and interest by individual organizations. Itās about understanding the impacts of projects on society, the environment and associated costs and benefits.
CCSAG recognized the urgent need for project managers to be armed with the relevant information, tools and techniques to identify and deliver projects with consideration for climate change and sustainability. CCSAG wants to inspire and encourage PMINZ members to be knowledgeable and proactively involved in climate change and sustainability Goals from the projectās ācradle to cradleā stages.
CCSAG activities will include connecting with entities involved in sustainability, the sharing of learnings and importantly, in projects collaboration. One of CCSAGās focus is on developing a user friendly, Sustainable Project Management Toolkit.

Article - Motivating Sustainable Project Management Practice
Our journey began in May 2021 when a group of passionate PMINZ (Project Management Institute of New Zealand) members embarked on a trailblazing initiative to develop a sustainable project management Toolkit for the Christchurch City Council. We know that local governmentās positive initiatives have considerable impact on the communities. Fortunately, the Christchurch City Council wholeheartedly supported our endeavor and provided a generous sustainability fund of $NZ 20,000, which allowed our vision to take shape and gain momentum.

Prawindra Mukhia B. Tech. M. Tech. MBA PMP, PgMP
A bit about meā¦Ā
I am a new PMI NZ volunteer (started March 2021) based in Christchurch.Ā I am originally from Darjeeling, India (yes, where the famous tea is from). I have worked in several countries in SE Asia.Ā I have recently retired from Christchurch City Council, where I worked in project/program management for over 15 years. Many of the projects had climate change and sustainability initiatives imbedded in them.
I joined PMI in 2007 and obtained PMP and PgMP certification.Ā I am keen on developing collaborations between PMI and other organizations. These collaborations, I believe, will also lead to creating a greater awareness of PMI in NZ.Ā I am also involved in other volunteering activities, a Rotarian (Riccarton Club), President of the Oaklands Toastmasters Club and President of Asian Institute of Technology Alumni Association NZ Chapter.Ā I have two wonderful granddaughters.Ā Spending time with them is always delightful. And I have other hobbies to fall back on ā golf, bridge, badminton and walking.
Ken Loughridge PMP
Originally from Northern Ireland, I came to New Zealand in 2004 toĀ establish andĀ lead a global IT function for a leading engineering and consulting company in the water and natural resources domain.
Since 2010 Iāve had a variety of programme and project management related roles in various sectors including Science, Agriculture, Technology and Aviation.Ā Some included change / transformation ā key interests of mine. Iām currently working on the Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE) programme with Transitional Industry Training Organisations (TITOs).Ā Iāve been a PMI member since 2009 and acted as a volunteer mentor over several years.Ā
Bapon Fakhruddin, PhD ā Technical Director- DRR and Climate Resilience
Dr Fakhruddin is an eminent hydro-meteorologist and disaster risk assessor with 19 yearsā global experience in water resources and climate resilience projects.Ā His key areas of expertise are hazards forecasting, climate and multi-hazard risk assessments and coastal community resilience.āÆ
His most high profile work is evidenced in the development of multi-hazard warning systems – including a tsunami warning system developed for Indian Ocean countries following the deadly 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.Ā He has since designed and helped to implement climate change and disaster risk projects for more than 25 countries across Asia and the Pacific.Ā Dr Fakhruddin has played a pivotal role in the design and implementation of multi-hazard early warning systems for floods, cyclones and tsunami, crucial to saving lives and livelihoods, while reducing property damage.āÆ
Dr Fakhruddin is currently working as a Technical Director- disaster risk and climate resilience inĀ Tonkin + Taylor International in New Zealand and a mentor and supervisor for postgraduate study in disaster risk management at the University of Auckland (UoA).Ā He is in a Steering Group of the Global Risk Assessment Framework (GRAF) of UNDRR;Ā Co-Chair for the Disaster Loss DATA and Risk Interpretation and Applications (RIA) Working Group of IRDR of ISC/UNDRR.Ā He is Co-Chair CODATA task group FAIR Data for Disaster Risk Research and is a Programme Board Member of GEO.
Craig Turner
Craig is a delivery and governance professional working across a wide range of organizations over the past 20+ years including; hi-tech start-ups, corporate, and government organizations, both in NZ and internationally.Ā A qualified PMP since 2003, Craig has been volunteering as a PMINZ Awards judge since 2018 and is looking forward to starting a Masters of Sustainable Business from the University of Otago in 2022.
ActivelyĀ involved in the Agile, PMO and Project Management communities to promote learning, Craig promotes an agile mind-set where practices utilized are balanced with a pragmatic, common sense approach.
Dr Doug Boddy
Dr Doug Boddy is currently employed by Vinci Construction Grands Projets as the Sustainability Programme Manager at the Link Alliance (City Rail Link) Project based in TÄmaki Makaurau Auckland, New Zealand.
He has over 20 yearsā experience working in the environment and sustainability sector, the majority of which has been in multi-disciplinary environmental consultancies in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. He also has experience working as a senior research scientist at the Environment Agency in the UK.
Doug is experienced in managing complex, multi-disciplinary projects and teams. He has undertaken environmental impact assessments for a wide range of public and private sector clients, and for small to large-scale planning and resource consent applications.
He is a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). He is also a Chartered Scientist (CSci), registered with the Science Council. He is a member of the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM) and the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES). He is an Associate Member of the Institution of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA). He was the Treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee of the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand (CASANZ) between 2016 and 2018, and he was an active member of the New Zealand branch committee between 2012 and 2018. Doug is currently a CSci Assessor for the IES.
Doug holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering (air quality) from the University of Leeds, an MSc in Urban and Rural Planning from Leeds Beckett University, and a BSc (Hons) in Geography from the University of St Andrews in the UK. Doug enjoys coaching and playing sport and spending time with family and friends.
Faiz Rasool, PhD in IoT, PMP, DASSM, ACP, PBA, CDP
Faiz Rasool, a PhD in IOT, is an Agile and project management Consultant and Trainer. He helps teams andĀ organizationsĀ choose their way of working to become learningĀ organizations.Ā Currently Faiz is running theĀ PM Training School, a PMI Premier Authorized Training Partner with offices in Sydney and Auckland.
You can approach him if you have questions around Internet of Things, Project Management, Business case writing and analysis, Agile transformation, Disciplined Agile Toolkit for enterprise agility and Citizen Development frameworks.
Gina Barlow
Gina Barlow leads KPMGās Project Advisory consultancy division in New Zealand. She has a strong ICT technical background and knowledge of large capital construction projects and she specialises in the leadership and delivery of large projects and programmes.
Gina is an experienced programme management consultant with a number of successful consulting and delivery assignments behind her that have left organisations with sustainable change. Gina has seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to delivering effective change programmes and projects.
Gina is passionate about improving project and programme management practices to enable better delivery of outcomes and implementation of change. Gina has a strong focus on the achievement of benefits and the return on investment from change initiatives.
Gina has wide-ranging experience in the areas of line management, programme / project management, contract management, communications and business change consultancy. She is able to consistently achieve deadlines under pressure and is adept at eliciting excellent team performances through the use of highly effective inter-personal skills and accomplished verbal and written communications which she has applied to several programme and project rescues.
Greg Rozen
Greg is one of the founding Directors of Leva Advisory Ltd a specialist PMO and Programme management consultancy which delivers, among other services, sustainable project management frameworks. With over 25 years of programme management experience, Greg has delivered a diverse range of programmes, established PMOs completed PMO & Project Management maturity reviews, IT and infrastructure projects as well as asset portfolio programmes both in the UK and New Zealand.
Greg is a P3M3 accredited Axelos consulting partner so is well versed at assessing an organisations delivery maturity and facilitating discussions around the benefits of raising maturity to gain executive buy-in to the journey.
Greg has found that working alongside client organisations to identify maturity gaps and guiding them to define the initiatives that will need to be put in place to build that maturity is especially rewarding ā it also helps transition ownership to the client so that the process is enduring and embedded. Greg has held a number of Board appointments and understands that achieving lasting change must be championed by the executive ā they need to see the benefits of process. For sustainability to gain traction organisations will need to embed the basics of portfolio and programme management and incorporate sustainable practices into the basics of their delivery approaches.
Joy Wendt
Kia ora, everyone! I am Joy and I’m a Senior Advisor at Wellington City Council, as well as a proud volunteer for over three years at the Project Management Institute NZ.
I have over five years of experience managing a diverse range of projects – delivering accountability documents, IT deployments, events and stakeholder engagements.
I’m passionate about making a positive impact in the world. That’s why I’m leading the PMImpact initiative, where we strive to educate PMI members and volunteers on how they can use the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to make a difference in their communities. Additionally, I serve as an executive member on the UNANZ Wellington Branch Executive Committee.
Lisa Huang
Lisa is currently the programme manager leading the Climate Change Response programme at ASB. This is a pan bank programme of work that helps to support a transition to a low emission and climate resilient economy, build capability for a low emissions future and help ASB and its customers to understand climate change risks and opportunities. Previous to this, she has had a variety of different project management and management consulting related roles which has provided her with a diverse skillset and an understanding of different challenges across various industries.
She has been a PMI member since 2021, having sat both her CAPM and PMP qualifications during this time. As an active PMINZ member, she values connecting with other members to share experiences and knowledge as well as being passionate about sustainability and climate change given the wide-ranging impacts.
She will be the board representative in this group, hoping to raise awareness and champion the vision of CCSAG.
Mike Roberts
Mike is a Director, Principal Consultant and Trainer with Millpond.Ā He is an experienced practitioner (14+ years) and active volunteer with the Project Management Institute (PMI) New Zealand Chapter.
Mike leads programmes and projects that deliver both IT and Business change for his clients. He is a Project Management Professional (PMP) and Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) and teaches professional project management practices in public, corporate and academic domains including atĀ theĀ MBA level. He also enjoys mentoring and being involved in conferences as a thought leader across the Asia-Pacific region.Ā
PatrĆcia InĆŖz
Patricia is anĀ eager to learn, caring, collaborative and result-driven professional with solid industry experience managing application implementation projects and several years of academicĀ experience teaching project management disciplines.Ā Her strength is the positive attitude and a drive to deliver ongoing value and enhance stakeholderāsĀ satisfaction.
Sylvia Maclaren
Sylvia is a director of Storm, a water resources consultancy based in Christchurch, New Zealand. As a programme manager and senior environmental scientist, she has a BSc(Hons) and MBA(Hons) and is an active member of the Institute of Directors, Water NZ and PMINZ. She has worked in small to multi-national consultancies, local and national government, and a Crown Research Institute. Recently she was the programme manager for the $1.2B Land Drainage Recovery Programme for Christchurch City Council and the project lead for a fast-tracked flood reduction project for Waimakariri District Council. She am currently seconded to Antarctica New Zealand as a project manager for the Scott Base Redevelopment.
Sylvia has been at the forefront of the discussion on the impact of sea level rise on New Zealandās coastal communities, including being the project manager on the feasibility study for a $350M tidal barrier to protect the city. She is engaged in the challenge that climate change presents; in many cases it is not a science and engineering problem but an economic and social issue.
As well as being a passionate project manager and environmentalist, Sylvia also enjoys trail running, mountain biking, and spending as much time as possible with her baby daughter.
Jon Bruce
Jon is heading up the Project Delivery team at DETA Consulting, a growing company with a diverse bunch of energy superheroes on a mission to decarbonise NZ, Australia and the Pacific. Jon is overseeing a portfolio of sustainability-focused projects that aim to provide low-carbon outcomes for DETAās clients.
Over the past 15 years, Jon has delivered a variety of technical projects in the construction, oil & gas, and nuclear industries. More recently at DETA, Jon has been involved in everything from delivering projects aligned with businesses internal carbon reduction strategies and sustainability drives, to supporting Pacific Islands with programs of work related to increases in energy efficiency, island resilience and development of human capital.
This variety of work requires a highly adaptable, dynamic and capable team of individuals and Jon enjoys combining his leadership talents, technical expertise and communication skills to support DETA in making a sizeable impact to support the worldās need to reduce our carbon footprint.
