About the Role

Reporting to the Chief Executive, you’ll play a key role in strengthening project management capability across the team at the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ). You’ll lead the development of fit-for-purpose project frameworks and templates, bringing structure and discipline to how projects are delivered. You’ll also manage the active project portfolio, supporting the team to effectively prioritise, plan, and monitor progress, risks, dependencies, stakeholders and outcomes.

We work on a diverse range of small and large-scale projects; some of our key current projects include a review of the Veterinarians Act, developing an Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS), Strategy, setting standards around what it means for an animal to be Under the Care of a Veterinarian, reviewing our Continued Professional Development (CPD) scheme, and work on biosecurity preparedness. In addition, we also lead operational projects focused on strategic initiatives, policy, and improving processes and systems.

What you’ll do

• Establish and implement fit-for-purpose project frameworks, templates for reporting, and best practices
• Lead the end-to-end delivery of multiple projects, ensuring scope, timelines, budgets and outcomes are met
• Coordinate and monitor progress across workstreams and contributors
• Identify and track project progress, risks, interdependencies, budgets and milestones
• Coordinate resources and ensure clarity of roles and responsibilities
• Prepare and present project updates and reports for governance and stakeholders
• Engage with internal stakeholders, senior leaders, and external partners to ensure alignment and support
• Facilitate project meetings and workshops as needed
• Support change management activities to ensure the successful adoption of project outcomes
• Build internal capability and promote good project practice across the team through coaching and knowledge sharing

What we’re looking for

• Proven experience in project management, programme management, or managing an active project portfolio
• Strong knowledge of project management frameworks, tools, and methodologies
• Experience setting up or embedding project systems, templates, and reporting structures
• Ability to develop and manage project scopes, plans, budgets, and timelines
• Skilled in coordinating multiple workstreams and managing risks, issues and interdependencies
• Change management skills or experience supporting the adoption of project outcomes
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills 
• Collaborative and adaptable, with a continuous improvement mindset
• Experience in the primary industries, regulatory, membership-based, or not-for-profit sectors is a bonus.
