We would like to invite you to discuss the topic of mentoring in the project management area.
Mentoring in the most classical sense means that a more experienced mentor provides a younger, less experienced individual, the mentee, with guidance and expert advice for their personal development – but that isn’t necessarily everyone’s view.
Research has shown that over a long time, mentees were more satisfied with their career, received greater compensation, and more promotions than non-mentored individuals. Similar positive outcomes have been shown for mentors.
During this meeting we would like to explore the understanding of mentoring among the PMINZ community, share experiences people have had with mentoring, highlight the needs for mentoring, and the capacity requirements of mentors.
There is very little literature about mentoring in the project management space – so I’m keen to hear your thoughts from both a Mentor and Mentee viewpoint.
My name is Kathrin Winkelmann, and I am currently a student at Ara Institute of Technology studying in my final semester towards a Graduate Diploma in Project Management. Part of my studies is an Industry Project where I am researching the value of mentoring in the project management arena, with the support of Millpond.
It is fair to say that I am a mature student and I have gained experience in a vast array of different industries over the years: the health sector, industrial electronic manufacturing, IT, and education sector. I have an engineering background but discovered that I had a passion for working with pregnant women once I had my children in 2000. I ran my own business for a number of years in this area. In 2007, it was time for a change, and I took up a position as a Product Innovation Researcher at AuCom Electronics. Here is where I was introduced to Project Management and really enjoyed it. The chronic illness of one of my children meant a halt to my career from 2013 for many years. Now that things are looking brighter in that respect, I can launch back into career 2.0.
